Called to Serve
Our congregation strives to be an extension of the hands of Christ in our community and for the world, believing that we are called to service to others because of the freedom we receive through faith in Christ.
Women at Ascension are active in the Women of the ELCA (WELCA) leading worship for the annual Hanging of the Greens and Bold Women's Sunday, and fundraising for ELCA Good Gifts and Operation Christmas Child. Read more.
"God's Work. Our Hands." Sunday began in 2013 in celebration of the ELCA's 25th anniversary. Annually, congregations serve in their communities, emphasizing our role as God's hands and feet at work in the world. In 2014, Ascension volunteers participated in a nursery workday and completed landscaping projects at the local elementary school which is one of our partners in ministry.
"Bread for the World" Sunday emphasizes how hunger is experienced by our neighbors in North Carolina and around the world. Each year, Bread for the World (bread.org) a nonprofit organization that works with churches, college students and others to end hunger, encourages an offering of letters to elected officials, asking for policy changes that will help end hunger in our lifetimes. Our congregation participates in this offering and also collects a special offering of financial gifts for Bread for the World.
