Outreach volunteers extend Christian compassion and helpfulness to persons of all ages in need of aid in body or soul throughout our local community.
Monthly, volunteers prepare and deliver a hot meal complete with salad, drinks and dessert to Cleveland County Rescue Mission's men’s shelter on Buffalo Street. Contributions to the program purchase groceries. The men and the administrators are always grateful for our involvement. The Rescue Mission's building that is adjacent to our church property is under renovation and will be used to provide housing for women and children in the future.
Graham Elementary School
In addition to our continued commitment to the weekend backpack program, volunteers worked at the school on God’s Work, Our Hands Sunday in September 2014 working on landscaping and mulching jobs that were needed. During the school year, we provide backpacks of food for students at the school.
Hospice Cleveland County
Throughout the year, Ascension members purchase Hearts for Hospice and support annual fundraisers that benefit hospice. Several members volunteer in the administrative offices, sewing for Memory Bear workshops or visiting patients. In Spring 2017, we hosted the semi-annual memorial service for families of recent patients. Throughout 2018 we are collecting items from the wish list for Hospice Cleveland County as an anniversary year project.
Little Free Pantry
We have opened a “Little Free Pantry” on the church property facing Marietta Street. The Little Free Pantry, is for neighbors helping neighbors. Its contents are for those who are not easily able to meet everyday personal needs and it is stocked with new, unopened non-food items that are not available through SNAP or EBT benefits, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, paper products and feminine care items. Here's a wish list (.pdf).
This Little Free Pantry is modeled on others that have been established since May 2016 when a pilot project began at Good Shepherd Lutheran in Fayetteville, Ark. The idea borrows from Little Free Libraries like those we enjoy near Jefferson Elementary School and Central United Methodist Church, in neighborhoods and in Casar.
Donations may be brought to the church office (M-Th, 9-1) at 300 N. Lafayette Street, Shelby; ordered online and shipped to the church at PO Box 266, Shelby, NC; or you can put your donation in the pantry box personally.
