THE LOVE MONTH

“For the love of Christ urges us on…” 2 Corinthians 5:14

A Christian’s love is to be always reflective of and for the sake of Christ. It is not a love the Christian possess but one displayed because it possesses the Christian. It is the love of Christ or “agape” love. It is a love that calls us beyond our own thoughts, feelings and opinions regarding who we should, could or even want to love. It calls us to love beyond ourselves. For this reason it is often not our first response or even desire. Agape love is a Christian discipline. By its very nature it calls for Christians to be very intentional in their love for others, especially when it comes to those we find it hard to love. It is good / God’s stuff and we know that with God all things are possible. Scripture teaches us that agape love is one of the active fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Faith works through it (Galatians 5:6) and it is how we are to serve one another (Galatians 5:13). Agape love is the love Christ embodies for us on the cross. As we enter into Lent this month, let us practice it and embody it for one another.

May the love of Christ continue to urge us on,

Jeff Erbskorn
Minister, Ascension Lutheran
